Among many Smudging herbs lies the aromatic vanilla earthy scent of Sweetgrass. Sweetgrass has a long history among different cultures from Europeans, to Africans, to Native Americans.

Sweetgrass has many medicinal benefits, and can assist in treating symptoms of a cold, flu, eye infection, blood clots, and edema. The scent of this plant is also believed to provide comfort to those who suffered miscarriage.

Some cultures press these plants for its oils, and use them as a topical carrier oil believed to soothe and heal the skin. It is important to note, that Sweetgrass is high in coumarin which is a toxic property, and could lead to liver injury if used incorrectly.

Smudging Sweetgrass leads back to The Native American culture which symbolizes healing, peace, and spirituality. Braided sweetgrass holds sacred meaning and is symbolic of the bond between man, nature, and God intertwined. This is often burned before a prayer, healing or spiritual ritual to smudge and purify the ceremonial areas of negative energies.

The smoke from the braided sweetgrass is then used to smudge and is believed to attract positive energies and purifying the presence of the human aura, embracing light and cleanliness.

Sweetgrass has been accepted to be a sacred plant, also known as vanillagrass, mannagrass, and holy grass, and is believed by many to oust negative energy, stimulate emotional strength, and to activate our mind and senses.

Like any other ritual, it is vital that the practice be done with respect to nature and the Creator. While many rituals stem from cultures, and is adopted by others, the very sacred act is nonetheless a very spiritual experience, and is meant to be treated in that regard.
