Spiritual Significance of Sea Shells

It isn't only messages in a bottle that wash up on shores. Seashells have deep symbolic cross-cultural meaning, and often come with their own hidden messages. The term seashell usually refers to the exoskeleton of an invertebrate (an animal without a backbone). Seashells have many unique details on them, such as pictures of palms, jewels, rainbows, flowers, dendritic art, sunsets, and more. Aside of its unique beauty, the patterns, and carvings may represent messages of love, hope, and faith. It is believed that seashells represent the safe journeys of the soul.



Metaphysical Literatures describe sea shells as void of negative energy because of its inherent connection to the sea. Sea shells are often associated with good fortune, love, prosperity, and fertility. Because its inherent connection to the sea, they are also recognized as feminine. Sea shells carry their own vibrations and frequencies, capturing ambient noise depending on its size and environment, resulting in the shells producing "ocean-like" sounds resembling of waves crashing against the shores. Sea shells are also believed to enhance the assimilation of vitamin deficiencies in the body, and assist in healing the nervous system.


Sea shells are symbolic of many things cross-culturally, and among them lies symbolism of Soul, Journey, and Protection.


Soul

The Soul is the very essence of energy. It is said that Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, it can only change forms. Sea shells often symbolize death, and reincarnation as a result of that, and gives us the opportunity to think with depth about the meaning of life, existence, and what is left of us once the soul has left the body and earth.


Journey

Sea shells tell a story of a journey once lived. This is a great reminder of embracing ones uniqueness and ability to create a life of a higher calling. There are thousands of different sea shells with different designs, and carvings embedded on the bed of the shell, reminding us of how are scars make us beautiful and purposeful.


Protection

Seashells are symbolic of strength and protection because of its very purpose in its sea life. The shell itself protected a living creature as it was guiding it through its journey in life. Clams, Oysters, and Scallops just to name a few, are marine life creatures that use sea shells as a form of protection against falling prey to the bigger fish in the sea. Even out of the waters, hermit crabs often seek out abandoned sea shells as a form of their own protection.
